The Proliferation of Nows 2014-18

These photomedia works engage with the formal characteristics of global webcams’ relayed digital images. They investigate the aesthetic experiences that a viewer undergoes as their consciousness shifts between physical, virtual and psychological spaces.

The rings are created from slices of sky—shifting from day to night—taken at the same moment in time from live webcam views around the world. The date and time these fragments of sky were captured is included in the title, shown in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The image is temporarily static but spatially stratified, even though the space depicted is the immaterial sky.

The final images, printed on aluminum and laser cut to a 90cm diameter circle, hint at portholes. The aim is to generate in the viewer a feeling of facing a void and to produce that peculiar sense of the space shifting, projecting both outwards and inwards.
